I’m not sure if a sodium-ion vs lithium-ion battery is real now, but without much knowledge of EV battery science, the sodium-ion battery from CATL sounds like a game changer; making Tesla 4680 batteries obsolete would also make other lithium-ion batteries obsolete.

These will not compete with 4680 batteries which are tracking to substantially exceed 300 wh/kg. This technology has the potential to displace LFP batteries in storage and in vehicles if they can push the energy density to 200 wh/kg (still a ways to go) and do it less expensively. Nonetheless, very promising for lower-range vehicles like the Sport.

IMO, there is a very real possibility that we will see the tech progress in a way that makes the compromise of lower range but higher charging speeds rather than endlessly pushing energy density higher to improve range. This could help achieve that.

Here’s another battery tech discovered by Drexel University that has the potential to eclipse the Tesla 4680 battery.  Very exciting things are starting to come out of laboratories these days.

Hooray for progress and cost reductions. it seems like rather than energy density4680's advantage so far is Manufacturing cost compared to the 2170 size.  Sodium-ion is also looking like lower manufacturing cost and longer life (which is also lower cost). Making EVs more affordable is great no matter who makes it work.
