I'm planning to dedicate some time this weekend to list my Tesla Model 3 for sale online, to help fund my Fisker Ocean. While I'm aware of a few platforms like Auto Trader, eBay Motors, and Craigslist, I'm unsure about the effectiveness of these paid services. Have you had any personal experience selling cars online, and do you have any recommendations regarding which site(s) to use?

@seancallahan I have used AutoTrader, Nextdoor, and Craiglist, but for me it was a pain to find serious buyers that actually showed up for the appointment or to make sure we met in a safe place, or to guarantee they came through with full/valid payment or did not try to renegotiate on the 11th hour to put pressure on you to accept their "check" in hand. For my last 3 cars however, I used Shift.com and Carvana.com, and although the offer I got was a little less than a private party (but higher than a dealer would offer) it was so worth it. Quick and guaranteed quote, free home pick it up, and you get payment wired in a few hours on the next day depending on when the transaction is completed. A lot more time efficient, and IMO much safer.

@seancallahan I am sure you probably already have thought of it but l will still list a few
1) posting on your friends and family social platforms like WhatsApp, Reditt etc
2) Posts in Facebook marketplace, and other B2C platforms
3) Doesn't hurt to get a quote from a few local dealers to compare and benchmark against
Many moons ago, the last car I sold was through Craigslist. I was getting a lot of lowballers even when I said firm my my price, one came and tested drive the car, then tried to negotiate down from my asking price, wasted time. At least I only met up with 3 perspective buyers and the 3rd one bought the car.
I am reading this thread now as I have been dragging my feet on listing a car I have for sale now that I have recently picked up my new truck... Seem like I will look into FB marketplace and then a couple local dealers.
I've had pretty good luck with FB marketplace. I've also used ebay (pricey) and listed with cars.com.

For my last private used car sale, I put my car on Craigslist, eBay, and cars.com. I got the first response from Craigslist and sold the car to the first person that came to look. I'll probably do the same this time, with possibly adding a few more like FB Marketplace, and FB Group
. I may skip eBay since they have increased pricing.Fisker Ocean One #2185 VIN 4947 | Mariana | MaliBlu | 22” F5 Black AirGliders | 7/9/22 Order | 3/13/23 Lock

@seancallahan What did you end up using to sell your car?

Sorry. I used all three platforms I mentioned above -- Auto Trader, eBay Motors, and Craigslist. On eBay I had a reserve of $37,500 and started the auction at $100. When I woke up the next morning after posting that the bid jumped to $37,999. At the same time, someone reached out locally from Craigslist where I had the vehicle listed for $38,999. After one test drive, the person from Craigslist agreed to buy the car for asking price and gave a $500 deposit. Then, I removed the listings including cancelling the eBay auction. The person that bought the car got an auto loan from San Diego County Credit Union and the bank cut me a check for the entire amount. Luckily, it was actually a very easy process.

It took me basically three days to sell the car from the day I creating this forum post. Craigslist was the winner and it cost $5 compared to eBay Motors which I believe was $79, Auto Trader Marketplace was $99.

I’ve only leased cars I’ve had worth more than $3,000 but I enjoy seeing the teacher become the student 🙂
I sold my Tesla Model X through https://www.findmyelectric.com … best and genuine responses. I had also listed it on cars.com and cargurus.com which have proven useful in the past for my ICE vehicle sales but not the best response for EV.
